Cape 31 sailing under spinnaker, full carbon rig in profile
SparsMasts

Where the whole rig pushes down.

Mast, spreaders and fittings, engineered as one structure from your righting moment and rig geometry.

01What it is

Compression from the rig.
Bending from the sails.

A mast is the rig's primary compression member. Every load in the standing rigging arrives at the masthead and the hounds and travels down the tube to the step, and the mainsail and headsail add bending on top of that compression. The section has to carry both at once without buckling, and at the lowest mass that is safe, because every kilogram aloft raises the centre of gravity and feeds pitching. Stiffness and weight are the same brief.

Section, wall thickness, laminate and taper are set to your righting moment, rig geometry and sail plan. Send us the specification form and we size the mast with you against the full load case.

Compression

The rigging pushes down.

Shroud and stay tension arrive as compression along the whole tube. Section and laminate are sized so the mast stands in column under peak rig load.

03How we build

Predictable,
not just strong.

  1. 01

    Analysis before tooling

The complete rig is modelled under working and peak loads before any tooling is cut. The analysis sets the section, laminate schedule and reinforcement at every hardware landing.

  2. 02

    Prepreg carbon, controlled cure

Masts are built from prepreg carbon cured at controlled temperature. A controlled cure is what gives consistent consolidation and fibre density along a component of this length, and consistency is what makes a mast predictable rather than merely strong.

  3. 03

    Proven at volume

We have built over sixty spars for the Cape 31 class. Volume of that kind is the real test of a process: every spar has to come out the same.

  4. 04

    Inspected before it ships

NDT ultrasound, structural calculations, Safe Working Load documentation and manufacturing records, delivered with the mast.
